Our Forest: The Green Lung of Hideaway Rio Celeste

When you arrive at Hideaway Rio Celeste, the first thing you notice is not a number or a technical figure. It’s the sound of the forest, the river… and that feeling of being surrounded by life.

But behind that sense of peace, there is something very concrete and powerful: a forest that works silently, every single day, to take care of the planet.
For us, sustainability is not just a nice idea. We are part of REMOCIONES, an official program of the Programa País of Costa Rica’s Ministry of Environment and Energy, validated by INTECO under the standard INTE/DN 03:2016.
This methodology allows us to quantify and report the removal of greenhouse gases resulting from forestry activities. In other words, it helps us accurately measure how much CO₂ our forest is able to capture and store.

How Our Forest Works

We can imagine the forest as a great green lung. 
The trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere and store it in their trunks, branches, and roots, while releasing oxygen. It’s a natural process, but its impact is enormous when measured on a larger scale.
To quantify it within this program, our forest has been divided into 20-by-25-meter plots. In each of these, the trees are counted and recorded one by one.
We currently have 7 active plots, with more than 180 trees in total. Each tree is part of a calculation that goes far beyond aesthetics or landscape value: it tells us how many tons of CO₂ this forest surrounding the hotel is able to store.

The Numbers That Tell the Story

Thanks to this ongoing measurement and monitoring, we now know that our forest has been able to store 6,745.93 tons of CO₂ so far.
If we put this figure into context with the hotel’s operation, the comparison is very clear: in 2024, the hotel emitted only 200 tons of CO₂. Our forest captures far more CO₂ than we generate as a hotel.
This means that the forest more than compensates for our emissions and, on top of that, leaves a large surplus in favor of the planet. We are not only reducing our impact: we are actively contributing to a very positive climate footprint.
